Deli Magazine: What made you decide to do a live album?

The Hypertonics: I've been told for years that we needed to do a live album since our energy is as frantic as it is, something you can't get in the studio.

DM: What has the response been like?

HT: Doing things the way that we do it causes success to be measured in a different way. We average about 1 GB of the album and it's MP3s downloaded from our site everyday from all over the place. There's been a steady stream of donations coming into the site. It'll be on iTunes soon for people who like structure in their lives and want to pay for something that's already available.

DM:Where do you get off giving your music out for free?

HT: We're trying a new way of thinking. Listeners and bands should be on the same team and I'm aiming to counteract greed as best I can.

DM: Do you ever plan to hook up with a label and do things in a more conventional way?

HT: Our idea is a mix of Dischord Records and Channel 13. Take and listen to what you like and if we've done our jobs as songwriters then donate some money to help us continue with what we're attempting. We're looking for comrades, not consumers.
